Gosling, duckling, killdeerling....right?

The Killdeer had been putting on the broken wing display the past month each time I had been cutting the grass and on July 25th I finally spotted the eggs. This photo was taken the next day.

The nest was just a few feet short of the hay field(clover). You'll probably need to zoom in to see the Killdeer but you get a feel of the setting/scene from this shot that you can't get from the tighter crops to follow.

On July 28th they cut the hay field.

I thought I saw movement under the adult on July 30th but after hours of close scrutiny I concluded that what I saw must have just been a loose feather dangling from all the excessive pruning she was doing.

Luckily we've been able to spend a good portion of our time monitoring things through our telescope from the spare bedroom window. When I first looked out this morning, July 31st, I could see one of the chicks beside the adult. By the time I grabbed the camera gear and got set up on the deck, I could see a second chick but no sign of a third one.

Then mom stepped up off the nest and to my disappointment, there was nothing else to see, just two chicks.

Then as mom walked towards the hay field, a third chick popped up out of nowhere and stepped right in line.

They were up and off the nest in no time and although my photos don't reflect it, my magnified focus views through the lens were the best views I have had of any bird, and killdeer chicks, or killdeerlings, are one of the cutest birds I've ever seen.

Swapping out the deer in Killdeer for fawn sounds like a logical option for a new name until you put it back together. Killfawn just doesn't have the same cute feel to it that Killdeerling does. 😜

I didn't want to jinx things by saying anything yesterday but I was really hoping the chicks had of waited another day before hatching because of the cut hay field. I was worried that the chicks would seek shelter in the hay before the farmer came through with the baler. I saw the farmer come in with big wheel rakes attached to the tractor late morning yesterday, July 31st, and forced myself to watch what I was afraid to see. As the tractor gathered the hay in neat rows before baling, the chicks ran towards mom as mom lead them far enough into the yard to be clear of any danger. A few hours after the wheel rakes gathered the hay into rows, the farmer came through with the baler and the anxiety heightened again. I couldn't see the chicks when the baler made it's first pass, but they popped up and showed themselves a few times on subsequent passes. I didn't watch them gather the hay bales but when I checked on them next, the Killdeerling were right out in the middle of the hay field where the huge square bales had been. I haven't been able to see more than one chick at a time this morning but I am happy to report that they all avoided becoming a farming accident yesterday.

That's a depressing movie. All 'Coming of Age' movies are depressing. The protagonist always has a friend die and / or get pregnant.
