I worked hard to get this shot, and I'm not a photographer so me to put effort at all is something.

I was curious about the ID and almost as clueless as you, so I asked Merlin for some help. The birds are Eastern Bluebirds, :D or were you just referring to the American Pipit?

It's bob wire fence, the Texas subspecies. There is about 1,500-2,000 foot of it in this shot.

Perhaps some photos of them in there more normal setting would help the id.

No, I'd never seen one on the wing or from below. My handful of sightings are all of birds on the ground, and only once at less than 75 yards.

EDIT - boy, marking text as Bold really doesn't stand out much, does it? I'm going to change font size to 'Large' instead. Hopefully that does a better job of highlighting the text I'm commenting on.

Yes, they certainly spend most of their time on the ground, but there was a few in some trees and on the fence which is kind of odd looking.

On occasion the best shot of the day is despicable. Murky light from fully overcast sky is my excuse. Nevertheless, I believe the pic documents an
American Robin presence in Central Texas during the month of February. You can argue with the proficiency of the image taker. You can't argue with the observation. https://www.flickr.com/photos/124304610 ... ted-public :P

I found you! I've been missing you all! Here's a Black crown night heron tree - about 34 of them or so. I hope this works - if not let me know what I did wrong.

The link works. If you want to place a Flickr photo inline, click on the little right arrow in the lower right of the photo on Flickr, choose "BBCode", copy all the text and paste it here.

Thanks for the help! I was told this was a "smoke phase" wild turkey. I had never seen one this color before. But I hesitate to call it a rare bird.

Here it is! I haven't added all the photos yet. We identified 11 different individuals by the tags across two visits on the same day.

Looks like a fun trip. Are you still birding by camera without binos?

Indeed. It's just a bit cumbersome with a larger camera. If I used a bridge camera, it'd make more sense to use them for the identification side first.

 This would have been a Thanksgiving celebration attended by my three younger sisters and my wife and I at Mom's ranch in Gillespie County Texas a few miles south of Fredericksburg. I wish I had a video or a pic of the scene. I was refilling my wineglass at the sideboard when I spied a wild Tom Turkey leading at least a dozen of his female admirers along the inside of the three strand bob wahr fence that encloses my mom's property from the neighbor's ranch. They were all marching in single file. It looked to me like a protest. Nevertheless, I took up an enormous carving knife and proceeded to the table where I dissected the roasted bird at its center into edible slices. It was very tasty with mashed potatoes and gravy and my wife's incomparable jalapeno cornbread and cheddar muffins. ;)
